Galloway provides the Angler and abundance of fishing opportunities in its Rivers and Lochs For the salmon and Sea Trout angler the River Cree (Newton Stewart Angling Association) and River Nith (Drumlanrig Estate) stand out and permits are readily available. There are also other smaller spate rivers which, depending on the conditions can be very successful. The River Nith also fishes well for Brown Trout and in the winter months Grayling. There are many lochs offering excellent stocked trout or wild brown trout fishing. The Angling Associations of Newton Stewart, Gatehouse of Fleet and Castle Douglas control a number of these and permits are available. Also, Drumlanrig Estate has several secluded lochs for a peaceful days fishing. For the coarse angler Loch Ken is an excellent choice. As well as being renowned for its Pike Fishing it holds good stocks of perch and bream. There are many other lochs providing excellent pike fishing. For advice on these, permits and bait and tackle the fishing tackle shops in Newton Stewart and Castle Douglas are excellent. Coorie cottage is situated in a cyclist's paradise. Along with miles of quiet country roads, Galloway has over 400 miles of sign posted cycle routes. The National Cycle Route 7 passes through Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet and Newton Stewart.

Coorie cottage is located near the Galloway Forest Park which comprises of sections of The 7 Stanes Mountain Biking Route offering numerous challenging routes. There are new routes launched at the nearby Kirroughtree Forest as well. Bikes can be hired from the Kirroughtree Visitor's Centre which also has a shop, cafe and play area.

This area is a paradise for walkers with walks for every ability close to the cottage. The Galloway Forest Park has flat walks through the forests and also strenuous hill walks, the highest being the Merrick if you want a real challenge. The Southern Upland way runs through Dalry, a five minute drive and you can walk enjoy a days walking on this well known path. Also, around Dalry is Watson's Bird Walk. Donald Watson is a well known bird artist and this walk captures places he used to spend time painting the areas bird life.
This area of Galloway is great for bird watching. Many types of birds can be seen in all areas but there is a RSPB nature reserve at Loch Ken which is ideal for observing many types of birds. Also there is the Red Kite trail with specific spots for observing the majestic Red Kite. Donald Watson lived locally who was a renowned ornithologist and artist. There is a bird walk and an art route in his name which are both worth following and spending time on.
Situated on the banks of Loch Ken about 10 minutes from the cottage is Galloway Activity Centre where there is something for everyone either on the water or the land. Follow the attached link for information on the many activities they offer, its a great day out!
